Two UN officials have warned that the humanitarian situation in Sudan “still represents an absolute disaster” and that conditions across the country are “horrific and worsening day by day.”<\/p>\n

This came during a session held today, Tuesday, by the UN Security Council to discuss the situation in Sudan, where it received briefings from Edem Soruno, Director of Operations and Advocacy at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs<\/strong>, and Stephen Omulo, Assistant Executive Director of the World Food Programme<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Soruno stated that 26 million people in Sudan are suffering from severe hunger<\/strong>, “equivalent to three times the population of New York City, (but) filled with hungry families and malnourished children.”<\/p>\n

She noted the ongoing displacement, with 10 million people forced to flee their homes<\/strong> due to violence, hunger, and deprivation. This includes 726,000 people displaced within and outside of Sennar State<\/strong>, in the southeast of the country, since 25 June following the advance of the Rapid Support Forces into the state, “meaning three-quarters of a million people displaced in just six weeks.”<\/p>\n

The UN official added:
